Battery Stewardship Scheme

Battery Stewardship Scheme

Improperly disposed batteries contribute to water and air pollution. When depleted they decay and leak and their chemicals soak into soil and contaminate groundwater and surface water.

The journey to establishing a battery stewardship scheme began in 2013, with momentum shifting into higher gear in 2018 with a clear direction and the design of a draft scheme. 2019 was a time of significant consultation and industry engagement and allowed the initial discussion paper to evolve into a solid conceptual scheme design. In 2020 BSC was successful in its application for Authorisation by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.

The Battery Stewardship Council has launched ‘B-cycle’ as the public facing brand of the scheme and commenced collecting levies on the 15th of January 2022. Below you will find:

The ATA supports the concept of a circular economy for toys and, in particular, removing toxic waste from landfill.
